Speech Therapy or Speech and Language Therapy are terms we use to describe working with your child to increase their ability to communicate. We build upon a wide foundation, utilizing sign language, picture cards, gestures and/or Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to support verbal communication development.
We believe that parents and caregivers are their child's best teachers, as they not only know the most about their child, but they also spend the most time with them. This allows them to practice more with their child than any skilled professional ever would be able to do. This then also allows for the family to encourage, reinforce and celebrate at all levels of a child's progress. We want to empower you!
Dysphagia, or a swallowing disorder, is an impairment in a child's safe ability to swallow liquids and/or solids. This means liquids and/or foods can penetrate the airway and potentially lead to aspiration of the liquid or food into the lungs. Once it enters the lungs, the foreign materials may lead to sickness and even death. It's of utmost importance to work with a skilled professional that understands the intricacies of the bodies anatomy and can speak with hospitalists regarding the best treatment plan for your child's health and wellness.
Feeding a child isn't always easy. When your child refuses to eat, or is unable to advance textures, the challenge of feeding may require skilled intervention. Being experts in understanding the swallowing mechanism, Speech Pathologists are an integral part of the team to ensure your child is eating and drinking as safely as possible. We have many years of assisting families in determining what underlying factors may be affecting feeding and work with families to help children safely advance their diets.
